  1. Can’t find any contact information on your websites, so hopefully this comment section will serve the purpose. I just found your article ‘Dirk Gently: An Invalid Ending’, and wanted to thank you for putting the basic problem in such simple terms.

I’ve been bothered by this for YEARS, and every couple-of-them I end up circling back to it, again, and burn time trying to make sense of that ending–why it supposedly “solved things” for the plotline.

Now, maybe I can put that fool’s errand to rest. The thing that bugs me, though, is that Adams was a smarter-than-average guy. How could he not have noticed? Or did he do it on purpose to force people to think? (I know it’s had that effect on me.) But, neither of those explanations is particularly satisfying. And since he has spent the last few years dead (for tax reasons) it may be a little difficult to ask him directly.

Anyway, thanks again for your article.

    1. Sorry for the late response, I just saw this. I’m glad you enjoyed that. And it’s hard to be an author, they do miss things. For others who are finding this thread, the write-up on Dirk Gently is here – http://www.lisashea.com/lisabase/fun/holistic.html

But in terms of authors getting confused, there is the famous situation with Raymond Chandler not knowing how one of his characters died :). http://www.williamahearn.com/bs1945.html So this does happen. When you’ve got a complicated plot sometimes things just get lost.
